Hello again from Vegas and a happy beginning to the holiday season!
Being a proud Canadian living in the United States I get to celebrate not one but two Thanksgivings, the Canadian one in October and the American one this coming week, this is then the gateway to the rest of the winter holiday season.
Whether you are cooking yourself, ordering in or heading to a friend or family member’s house for dinner it is nice to have few different options for beverages. You don’t have to limit yourself to wine, there are some amazing winter beers out there that can be a nice surprise or even offering a holiday themed cocktail can be fun. Here in Las Vegas the restaurants and bars are gearing up for a busy holiday season and there are some amazing recipes out there, I recommend getting out and trying a few!
Inevitably as the holidays begin friends and family are always calling to find out what bottle of wine to take to that special dinner party. Being a wine professional in the hospitality business I usually will side with a bottle of wine over something else to drink.
There are many “classic” holiday wines. This is list of just a few of my favorites.
Beaujolais– Great with turkey
Riesling (Sweet or Dry) – Also great with turkey and can be a nice aperitif
Champagne or other sparkling wine – nothing says celebration better than a bottle of bubbles!
Pinot Noir – This wine can be light and fruity to rich and spicy depend where it’s from, it’s very versatile grape
These wines are just a few ideas and remember, there is never a single rule that must be adhered to when it comes to pairing wine and food. What really matters is that it tastes good and everyone enjoys!!
