I was reading the post by Kim Bechtel of Your HR Co and couldn’t help notice that he was also making the point I spend a lot of time trying to make – it isn’t attraction- Retention it is Retention – Attraction!


The best way to attract great or the “right” people to your organization is to take care of the people you have.  BUT and it is a BIG BUT… how do you do that?


Most companies encounter one problem and create a blanket policy across the company or departments to “take care” of any future incidents.  The only problem with that is… it may not have been a problem anywhere else and now your employees see another reactive policy or procedure they have to abide by even though it doesn’t affect them.


Stop managing a group and start managing individuals!  We are in the midst of our annual survey and it is clearly outlining the differences in expectations from one employee to another.  The answer is not blanket policy but one on one communication. Very few people in your business have the same requirements of their job or expectation.  Can yo9u tell me the fulltime student has the same requirements as a single parent as a single person and so on?  I don’t believe they do.  Want proof, see our 2010 survey here:



Don’t punish your entire organization with more policy & procedure because one person wasn’t equipped to deal with a problem.  Blanket policies are impersonal, insulting and truthfully the lazy way to deal with problems.
